19th Century

USS Arizona

The first "Arizona", laid down in 1858, was an iron-hulled side-wheel steamer that served in the Civil War.

The second USS Arizona was a 3850-ton steam frigate launched in October  1865 as USS Nashaminy

 

20th Century

 

The third USS Arizona BB-39, a Pennsylvania Class Battleship, was authorized on March 4, 1913. Japanese bombers sank the Arizona in the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and there is now a USS Arizona Memorial on the site.                                                                                                                                                                 

                                                                                       

 

The USS Arizona BB 39 was sunk, in an unprovoked, surprise attack by carrier based planes of the Japanese Navy. Never having fired a shot in anger, "She" symbolizes not only the "Attack on Pearl Harbor", with the loss of 1177 men, but the will power and fighting spirit of the United States.
